Tuesday, November 20th 2007 - The
Reality Store
Reality
Store is as a career day that goes beyond exploring career
opportunities. It is a role playing game where students get
a realistic experience of how money is earned and spent using
real world scenarios. The Reality Store concept was originally
developed by BPW/Indiana.
When they enter the Reality Store each
student will receive card that gives them a role to play:
a life with a job earning X amount of money each week. Students
then visit booths manned by community members at which they
pay their monthly bills. At each booth, students make decisions
concerning the standard of living they'll assume. For example,
at the housing booth (manned by a Realtor), students decide
if they want to pay for a one-bedroom efficiency apartment
or a five-bedroom home. They will make choices based on their
income on: housing, transportation, insurance (medical, life,
car, house, and renters), food, child care, and clothing.
They will have to deal with unexpected expenses such as accidents
that might occur and consider choices on advancement and college.
By interacting with professionals the
students not only get current information about living expenses
they learn what requirements are needed for different careers.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to network.
Networking is a vital part of building confidence and taking
that first positive step to a career direction or a career
choice. Students have the opportunity to meet and establish
a mentor.
Adult volunteers are needed to man the booths and volunteer
in other areas. If you would like to help please contact Cindy
Hambright or complete our contact form.
